Adverse Selection
Definition
A market failure where one side knows more than the other before a deal, and the better-informed side opts in selectively. Markets shrink because the average quality of what's traded sinks.
Example
Health insurance: people who expect to be sick are most eager to buy, pushing premiums up and driving healthy buyers away.
