Coase Theorem
Definition
If property rights are well-defined and transaction costs are zero, private parties can bargain to an efficient outcome regardless of who holds the rights initially.
Example
A factory pollutes; neighbors are harmed. If they can negotiate cheaply, they reach the right level of pollution either way.
