Fundamental Theorems of Welfare
Definition
Two theorems linking competitive equilibrium and Pareto efficiency. First: every competitive equilibrium is Pareto efficient. Second: every Pareto-efficient allocation can be supported by some competitive equilibrium with lump-sum transfers.
Example
Together they ground the case for markets — and for redistribution via lump-sum transfers when fairness matters.
