Okun's Law

Definition

An empirical rule of thumb: every 1 percentage-point rise in unemployment is associated with about a 2 percentage-point fall in real GDP below potential.

Example

If potential GDP growth is 2% and unemployment rises by 1 pp, GDP growth typically drops to around 0%.
