Minimum Wage

Definition

A legal floor on hourly pay. Set above equilibrium, it raises wages for some workers and (in standard models) reduces employment for low-skill jobs.

Example

A $15 minimum wage in a market where equilibrium is $12 creates a labor surplus — some workers can't find jobs at $15.
