Fractional Reserve Banking

Definition

A system in which banks hold only a fraction of deposits as reserves and lend out the rest. Creates money via the deposit-loan-redeposit cycle.

Example

A 10% reserve ratio allows banks to multiply $100 of new reserves into up to $1,000 of deposits.
